Less than an hour from La Côte d’Argent campsite (58 km), Saint-Médard-en-Jalles is a natural commune, partly covered by forest. The former railroad line linking Bordeaux and Lacanau has been converted into a cycle path, making it an original cycling route.

Another feature of the town’s character is the Jalle river, which runs through it and forms the boundary between the Graves and Médoc rivers. This makes it possible to admire a number of bridges and beautiful viewpoints, including the emblematic Moulin de Gajac. This mill, whose history dates back to the 13th century, continues to regulate the river. The more recent Caupian mill is also worth a visit.

The most famous is the Château de la Mothe-Gajac, as proud as it is original, with a square tower and three circular towers.

Lovers of religious heritage will be charmed bySaint-Médard church, which dates back to the 11th century. Altered several times, it stands out from the crowd with its asymmetrical structure and square bell tower.

What to do around Saint-Médard-en-Jalles?

Saint-Médard-en-Jalles is a gateway to the Médoc. Visiting vineyards and wineries is therefore one of the must-do activities in this Bordeaux region, which has a worldwide reputation.

Avensan is the first place to stop, just 19 km away. If you had to choose just one estate to visit, it would be Château de Citran, which combines the pleasure of wine tasting with the beauty of a 13th-century building, listed as a historic monument.

Just as rich in wine production, Vertheuil also stands out for its medieval heritage. The remains of theAbbey of Saint-Pierre, in particular, are a treasure trove much appreciated by wine lovers. You can also visit the Château Beyzac estate, with its listed fortress.

On the wine trail in Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe

Not far from here, Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe are not to be missed in the Bordeaux wine region. Neighbors, the two communes are positioned on the banks of theGironde estuary, offering pleasant walks and the chance to take a cruise on the water. Other local activities include nature activities at the Saint-Estèphe pond and a visit to the Gallo-Roman thermal baths at Chassenon, an astonishing archaeological park.

But when you’re on the wine trail, Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe stand out above all for the grands crus of the Médoc châteaux that can be found there. The Maison du tourisme et du vin in Pauillac and the Maison du vin in Saint-Estèphe are ideal stopping-off points before exploring the vineyards. And let’s not forget the many châteaux, such as Mouton, Rothschild, Peyras and Puycharnaud, to name but a few.
